Bariatric surgery is the general term which covers surgery which helps those wishing to undergo massive weight loss. There are 2 types of procedure - Lap Band and Gastric Bypass. From the commencement of registrar training at St Mary’s Hospital, London, Shaw has developed a specialist interest in upper gastrointestinal surgery. Working as lead clinician he has a comprehensive experience of complex upper GI surgical problems and leads one of the South’s foremost Upper GI Surgical Units. Shaw has also published and presented widely on upper GI and laparoscopic related subjects.

Over the last eight years Shaw has developed and managed one of the largest practices of Obesity Surgery in the South of England. The Obesity Surgery Unit has experience of over 400 cases and employs a multidisciplinary team for patient care. Currently, the Unit performs over 150 obesity procedures per annum and provides services for both NHS and Private patients. He is a member of council for the British Obesity Surgery Society.
